A girl you should date

Date a girl who reads. Date a girl who spends her money on books instead of clothes. She has problems with closet space because she has too many books. Date a girl who has a list of books she wants to read, who has had a library card since she was twelve.

Find a girl who reads. You’ll know that she does because she will always have an unread book in her bag. She’s the one lovingly looking over the shelves in the bookstore, the one who quietly cries out when she finds the book she wants. You see the weird chick sniffing the pages of an old book in a second hand book shop? That’s the reader. They can never resist smelling the pages, especially when they are yellow.
She’s the girl reading while waiting in that coffee shop down the street. If you take a peek at her mug, the non-dairy creamer is floating on top because she’s kind of engrossed already. Lost in a world of the author’s making. Sit down. She might give you a glare, as most girls who read do not like to be interrupted. Ask her if she likes the book.
Buy her another cup of coffee.
Let her know what you really think of Murakami. See if she got through the first chapter of Fellowship. Understand that if she says she understood James Joyce’s Ulysses she’s just saying that to sound intelligent. Ask her if she loves Alice or she would like to be Alice.
It’s easy to date a girl who reads. Give her books for her birthday, for Christmas and for anniversaries. Give her the gift of words, in poetry, in song. Give her Neruda, Pound, Sexton, Cummings. Let her know that you understand that words are love. Understand that she knows the difference between books and reality but by god, she’s going to try to make her life a little like her favorite book. It will never be your fault if she does.
She has to give it a shot somehow.
Lie to her. If she understands syntax, she will understand your need to lie. Behind words are other things: motivation, value, nuance, dialogue. It will not be the end of the world.
Fail her. Because a girl who reads knows that failure always leads up to the climax. Because girls who understand that all things will come to end. That you can always write a sequel. That you can begin again and again and still be the hero. That life is meant to have a villain or two.
Why be frightened of everything that you are not? Girls who read understand that people, like characters, develop. Except in the Twilight series.
If you find a girl who reads, keep her close. When you find her up at 2 AM clutching a book to her chest and weeping, make her a cup of tea and hold her. You may lose her for a couple of hours but she will always come back to you. She’ll talk as if the characters in the book are real, because for a while, they always are.
You will propose on a hot air balloon. Or during a rock concert. Or very casually next time she’s sick. Over Skype.
You will smile so hard you will wonder why your heart hasn’t burst and bled out all over your chest yet. You will write the story of your lives, have kids with strange names and even stranger tastes. She will introduce your children to the Cat in the Hat and Aslan, maybe in the same day. You will walk the winters of your old age together and she will recite Keats under her breath while you shake the snow off your boots.
Date a girl who reads because you deserve it. You deserve a girl who can give you the most colorful life imaginable. If you can only give her monotony, and stale hours and half-baked proposals, then you’re better off alone. If you want the world and the worlds beyond it, date a girl who reads.
Or better yet, date a girl who writes.

Dreamer

In which I explain the way I dream. And how it feels. I feel that I should write this in my mother tongue, which is German. I am sorry. Love, Svenja

Doch nichts geschah. Nur Blicke. Gesten.

Ahh. So. Endlich angekommen. Oh Mist, kein Parkplatz, alles Halteverbot hier. Ach, egal. Notfall. Man rannte.

Top 10 running tips

My apologizes for the radio silence on my blog. Life has been demanding lately and with major changes of the very same ahead I had not much time for blogging.
Nevertheless, I love being part of the blog world and enjoy active participance as much as I do reading other blogs, new blogs, connecting here and there and let myself be inspired.

The only thing I always do - even if life gets overly busy- is running.
I run to keep in balance. I run to stay in shape. I run to feel good. If I do not run I might turn grumpy, stressed or annoyed with myself, especially the latter. Throughout the years I have learned that I need this physical workout several times a week to keep me going, to feel healthy and contend. Sometimes it is difficult to jump out into the cold and just do it, but mostly after 10 minutes it feels alright.

This year I have even made it to run throughout the dark season, and I have never regretted one workout! Sometimes I get asked what I do to keep up the motivation. I thought I sum up my experience to share it here on my blog:

1.Good shoes. There is nothing more annoying than feeling your feet all the time (hurt, itch, pressure etc). I have the Asics fuji attack. I love it. It is a cross country shoe, and I have to admit I sometimes use it on roads too, which might cause early replacement, but I cannot recommend it enough.
2.Adequate clothes. Or getting distracted by your non-adequate clothes is another motivation killer.(Yes, I already broke up my training because of being cold / too hot / slipping bra etc.) As a rule of thumb I always try to wear clothes which I hardly feel. Also too less clothes can be distracting, like when I forget my gloves I will continuously think about how cold my hands are...
3.Music.
Music is a famous motivator. I hardly take time to listen to my favorite tunes and the workout time couldn't be more perfect to do exactly this. Alternatively go for some tunes, which sound like they get you started. I love electronic / dance / techno mixes to keep me going and distract me from the thoughts involving 'i cannot do that anymore' or 'I'd rather sit on the sofa now and watch xxx'. Music always does its job well ;-)
Nike+ Activity log
4. Nike+ If you are a freak like me you can get yourself Nike's sensor Nike+ (It looks like this and you can pop it into your shoe and connect it to your iPod) to record all your runs for you! Seeing the actual results can cause (at least it does with me) even more motivation to get out. You can even set goals, such as running 3 times a week over 4 weeks for example. The gadget will record everything, you can look it up online and it will tell you how you go on. I love that.
5.Running partner Another good source of motivation is to get yourself a running pal. Get yourself someone and make commitments. Make dates. Stick to them. It is always much easier to cancel alone than to cancel on someone else. Look, he will be so disappointed ;-) If you happen to have nobody in your circle who is into running, try to convert one, or, alternatively grab your dog, or your neighbours' dog. Most dogs love it, although some need to be specially trained to run with you on a leash.
6. Water It is very important to stay hydrated, but not filling ones belly completely up so that it hurts. I usually drink one small glass of tab water to keep me going. Last Sunday I forgot doing so and I felt like my throat was sore and I was continuously thinking how bad it went, and how thirsty I was.
7. Variety Running the same trail every week can be quite boring and one day THE motivation killer! Also if you run the same route over and over again, you might feel too pressured to match the same times again, which can be de-motivating. Keep it interesting, run different routes, Nike+ can help here as well to find a route in your town.
8. Different workout types Doing the same workouts again and again can get quite boring too. That's why I try to vary not only my routes but build in different types of workouts once in a while. Although I really love my relaxed 10K I sometimes do some small interval training, or fast but short runs. Also there are those 'oh-please-not-today' days. Try to squeeze in a small workout. I know it'll hurt, it'll be annoying, but if you plug in your favorite tunes, and run super slow it'll be over in no time!
9. Weather Use all types of weather. I know this sounds odd, but a run in a little bit of gentle rain can be super refreshing and inspiring, or get the minus 4 degrees on your side: Dress warm and enjoy the clear air! If you run through, your immune system will also certainly benefit! But make sure you have a hot shower upon your return!!
10. Treat yourself From time to time a nice treat for one self is justified, I find. Even if it's something very small, like watching a dvd afterwards, or taking a hot bath is wonderful to schedule in. A best treat however is to be pleased with oneself and feeling absolutely fabulous. Promised!
Ha! And that brownie tastes even better after that workout ;-)

Anyone else also into running?
What are your top tips for motivation?

Would love to hear yours!!!

Svenja

Monday

Away from home alone

The weekend is over far too soon again and it has been a beautiful one.
I did a lot of running, yoga and meditations and spend as much time outdoors as possible.

Especially on Sunday the weather was gorgeous:
The sun came out to play

and so did we...

The dogs seemingly had some serious sniffing business to sort out....

Later on they seriously even swapped holes to check whether the other one did a proper job ;-)

The girls:
My mum, my sister and myself.

Today I drove all the way down to a place in the middle of the country.

It is called Bielefeld.
And it is beautiful.

To get an idea of the place I went out for a run, since I needed to get rid of my energy after the 4,5 hour drive anyhow.

Back in the hotel room I need to turn on some music.
I always feel that music is most comforting when away from home alone.
Good reason to play some of my favorite tunes.

****

Yesterday my running pal M has told me about their fasting traditions. Every year each family member would chose something they would stay away from for 7 weeks; they are free to chose, what it would be.
And I found that this is a great idea.
I mean, I never did fasting before and I thought it is a brilliant idea to join in and stay away from everything sweet for 7 weeks.
This Wednesday.
Until Easter.
Puhhh. Long time.
But I thought it should be a real challenge, so mere abstinence of TV watching would not work for me since I hardly watch any.
Alcohol also not, since I hardly drink any.
I don't smoke, I don't eat any meat.
So, I could go vegan for 7 weeks, or go sweetless - and the latter definitely is the harder choice.
My family is also participating:

My little sister is joining me in going without sweets.
My dad is going without meat (and he is a real meat lover), my mum is joining him, plus she is going without wheat.

Is anyone of you fasting? Did you ever do that before?
What are your experiences?
What is your 'without' for the next 7 weeks?

And now I will make myself a little bit less alone and go and find a nice bar where they serve me some olives and crackers and a lil glass of vino to comfort me, ha ha.

Have a great (Carnival) week!

Love,
Svenja xx
(who really is absolutely ZERO into Carnival!)

Music and Lyrics - If my life had a soundtrack ...

Source
Music has always been a big part of my life and I can safely say that I could not live without it. No really.
I mean, if I am feeling down, music is one source to remind me there is no reason, or maybe there is but that is not worth it to feel down. And there are loads of songs out there I will never get tired of listening to. And songs which mark precious times of my life.
When I saw this idea over at Bevchens place I immediately thought, that I will need to make one post like this too, and here we go...

  1. The Calling - Wherever you will go (probably my all time favorite, I am sure I am still going to like it when I am over 80, living in a home for elderly and have my own teeth no more ;-))
  2. All Saints - Pure shores ( LOVE it. Love the lyrics. I also love the movie it features. All DiCaprio movies in fact. He is genius)
  3. Take That - Never forget
  4. Fedde Le Grand - Put your hands up for Detroit (OK. I coincidentally clicked back to see the video. Maybe I shouldn't have. The song is cool though.)
  5. Ace of Base - All that she wants (That was on my first CD EVER. Yes. My first album was 'Happy Nation'; and I sang this song with a friend on a dictaphone tape which accidentally played during English class at uni. The tape had the wrong side... FAIL. I also liked the song.)
  6. Billy Talent - Fallen Leaves (No party without Billy Talent, really)
  7. Sunrise Avenue - Fairytale gone bad (I love his voice. He is hilarious, have you seen this one?)
  8. Him - Right here in my arms (even though I find that there are better versions of this song)
  9. Katie Melua - I cried for you
  10. Amy McDonald - Dancing in the dark (Although I also like the 80ies version of that song)
  11. The Killers - Human AND Mr Brightside
  12. Nathalie Imbruglia - torn
  13. James Horner - A Kaleidoscope of Mathematics (A beautiful mind theme song)
  14. The Disco Boys - For You (THE party hymn of my student time. Makes me feel forever young)
  15. Yo-Yo Ma playing Ennio Morricone - Lady Caliph
  16. The cardigans - Lovefool
  17. The Kooks - She moves in her own way
  18. Hans Zimmer's piece 'run free' from the motion picture movie 'Spirit' of which I could not find any video... But this has been such a powerful song to me, and I used to put it in, just before important exams to collect myself and be ready.

OK. What does that say about me?!
Honestly, I don't know. Most songs seem to have accompanied me for a long time and I seem to love them as ever.
Well, some of the songs have a history, most don't and basically it is just a collection of songs I'd have on my soundtrack.

What would you have on yours?

Almost weekend!!

Love,
Svenja
xx

PS: As in my country the record labels have protected their copy rights on youtube I could only link live // acoustic versions of the respective songs; some are really cool, with some I would have preferred to link up the original.

Wednesday

Yes. I am in.

Random Awesomeness

If you follow me on pinterest you probably know that I recently created my board Random Awesomeness.

And this is my latest awesome find:

I love this impressionist / post impressionist touch it has!
And the minimalism expressed through the picture.

Fashion, art & cars.
Nnnnice!

Even though I am completely NOT into cars...

What do you think?

Friday

Insta-Friday

It's Friday and I thought I'll do a small round up of the week with some insta-catch up ..
You can also turn the blue button into green and follow me :-)
(Here)

To cheer up this 50 shades of grey end of January / beginning of February mood, I thought it was time to bring in some color with these blue shoes...

Aren't they cute?
Certainly a good way to distract from this...

Miserable, miserable rain...

Since the white snow world melted away we have been hit by enormous rainfalls which made our shed flooded. Booh.
At least (fortunately) we do not have a cellar!

Horse(wo)mannish

Horse riding is one of my passions.
This is how it looks if I get ready to go.
3 layers of clothes, since it is still quite cold, riding pants with fake leather on the inside to prevent slippery business when in the saddle, body warmer, jodpur boots, and leather chaps.

I do have Cavallo boots, but I only got those chaps (by Busse) a few months ago, and I find them quite comfortable.

For the rest I need a helmet, riding gloves (I use these, already for ages, I truly think they're the best)and spurs. And carrots. Lots of carrots, bread and apples of course ;-)

Another one arrived this week, someone who really wanted to hop on my classics club reading list.
(I better plan a whole year extra for him, ha ha)

Here he is...

And now I wish everyone a lovely weekend!

What are your plans?
Did anyone read Ulysses already? How was it for you?
And anyone else into horseback riding?

Svenja
