The Language of Flowers

I have been thinking a lot about different topics lately, one of which I came across is the language of flowers. I love flowers, I get some for my appartment almost every weekend - they make me feel good. Also I love wearing them in my hair, or have dried flowers in a linen bag in my bedroom (My little provence outside my kitchen window clearly did not die for this purpose though.Duh). Usually I love orchids, basically because I only have to water them once a week. But did you know that orchids have the meaning of refined beauty?
I remembered that Shakespeare often used flowers in his works; also I have read a novel last year where it was about the language of flowers.

It has been very popular in Victorian England and there are real floral dictionaries available (link)and of course I am beyond fascinated, immediately wanted to order one. Unfortunately I am not home a lot lately so that I will have to wait until my life gets a bit more settled again. Anyways, there is almost a flower for everything one wants to say, take a sneak peek here, wikipedia summarized it for us. Love the daisies, and the meaning of the phlox, since I am huge believer of soul mate relationships anyways, in both love, and friendships. Do you too? Oh, and of course there is the rose with all its numerous meanings, each color means something different.
Clearly Elizabethan and Victorian times have been so much more romantic. We would have just all exchanged secret messages through flowers. How fantastic is that?
Oh boy..

These days, we only have whatsApp... this kinda suck, doesn't it?

Anyways, I am off to the movies & wishing you a happy weekend!

Farewell, my friends!

xx

(Am definitely going to stop my Victorian musings now)

  1. We learned a bit about the use of flowers to send messages in Victorian England at school, but the only one I ever remember is rosemary for remembrance. And I only remember that because it's used in an Agatha Christie book!
